Our Story
Drawing by Chrys Henning
For over 350 years the Alhampton Inn has been a gathering place for the residents of the Somerset hamlet of Alhampton, within the parish of Ditcheat.
We know from parish records that there has been an alehouse here since the 17th century. By the 18th century it was operating under the name of the Knave of Clubs. We don't know when it became an inn but believe it was towards the end of the 19th century.
When the pub closed in late 2022, villagers and friends rushed in to save it from disappearing. A Community Benefit Society was created, funds were raised and a lease was signed with the new owners. In less than a year, the pub doors are open once again!*
Like so many pubs in small rural communities, the Alhampton Inn has been a symbol of continuity in an ever-changing world. It seems only fitting that the Knave of Clubs pub sign is reinstated to its historic place now the community has taken over the running of the pub.
